Bali Beyond the Crowds: Finding Your Own Paradise

5 min read·

Most tourists only see Kuta and Seminyak. The real Bali — Ubud's rice terraces, Lovina's black sand beaches, and temples with no queues — awaits those willing to explore.

Bali has long been a victim of its own popularity. But venture 30 kilometres from Kuta's crowded streets and you'll find a completely different island — silent rice paddies, ritual processions, and villages untouched by mass tourism.

Ubud: the spiritual heart of the island

Ubud sits amid jungle and rice terraces in Bali's interior. Sacred Monkey Forest, the royal palace, and the Tegalalang rice terraces are best visited at sunrise, before the tour groups arrive.

Uluwatu: cliffs above the Indian Ocean

Pura Luhur Uluwatu temple perches atop a 70-metre cliff at Bali's south-western tip. The nightly Kecak fire dance at sunset is unmissable. Below are some of the island's best surf breaks.

Lovina: Bali's quiet north

Northern Bali is calmer, more authentic, and far less visited. Lovina's black volcanic beach and early-morning dolphin boat trips are the highlight, along with Banjar hot springs nearby.

Practical tips

  • Best time: April–October (dry season)
  • Rent a scooter — it's the easiest way to get around
  • Always wear a sarong in temples (available to rent at entrances)
  • Bargain at markets — opening prices are typically 2–3× higher
  • Buy a local Telkomsel SIM for excellent island-wide coverage
